Eat The Weeds: Episode 112: Lake Lily Part One Video
http://www.eattheweeds.com/
WIld food is where the water is. The farther you get away from water, the less food you will find. Also a large amount of edible weeds are found in urban areas, not in the wilds. To demonstrate that, Green Deane walks around a small lake and points out a couple of dozen edible species.
I know this is off ...
I know this is off the subject but I just keep thinking there's? some crazy spider just waiting for this guy. "my fangs are ready... "
Then halfway through the video "ok, i'm getting my antivenom treatment... I knew I shoulda watched out for that fangbite recluse"
@TheMistapig ...
@TheMistapig Exactly, and is a pointthat many people can't or don't want to grasp. Many outdoor groups ask me to give lessons and? where to they alway camp? A long ways from water and mosquitoes, and edibles.
The comment on the ...
The comment on the further you go into the forests the sparser/fewer the edibles are is very true. This year I have hiked in about 15 of Florida's state forests and as soon as I leave the parking lots and picnic areas the vegetation drops down in variety and possible? foragibles. There are foragibles, but it becomes a case of seasonal harvest and luck finding them.

@ericladnier
It's more of a tonic than a food. I eat 2-4 leaves? at a time. It can have rather active medicinal components. If you eat too much, you get sweaty and slightly dizzy. Most medicinal systems which know it (Pennywort is known as "Gotu Kola" in Ayurvedic medicine) only recommend about 3 leaves per dose. It has a calming, focusing effect on the mind.

Any concerns on chemicals that may have found a way into those? urban waters?

It's probably either? cranes bill or storks bill
That's cool, but I ...
That's cool, but I was actually asking about the weed around that one. I guess it is more like wood sorrel, but? uglier.
I think you are ...
I think you are referring to Dichondra carolinensis aka pony foot, I don't know it as an edible. However houstonwildedibles does but he is the only one I know who? does. It is bitter and I have not explored its edibility,
At 4:50, just above ...
At 4:50, just above the crepis, there is a small weed that I see everywhere but I can't identify. It is the one that kind of looks like a pennywort,? but it has leaf separations coming from the center. Do you know what it is called and if it is edible?
I didn't say it ...
I didn't say it tasted great. It's a strong little plant. I eat a little of it well cooked.? One can chop up a few and add them to salads for flavoring.
Is Pennywort really ...
Is Pennywort really edible, and if so how do you make it paletable? I boiled about a half gallon of the stuff for about 15 minutes but it still tasted terrible. I than drank a glass of whiskey and tried again, but still no luck. I ate all of it but hated? every bite.
Good work, at the ...
Good work, at the old farm we used to get the seeds from? bull nettles and they taste like coca nut.
Good? stuff!

Thank you, good ...
Thank you, good video, I use wood sorrel in my green smoothies. I like learning about weeds that taste good? raw.
Yep, it's all done ...
Yep, it's all done by? me and a $149 camera... and unfortunately it shows....but ya do what ya gotta do....
Yes, I heared that ...
Yes, I heared that some people vomit after eating? the root. I can not test that myself though, since I have an iron clad stomach. Things that would kill some people are fine for me to eat, though I try not to make a habit of it. I think they may vomit though because of the strong bitterness.
I had a similar but ...
I had a similar but more extensive effort at making them edible. More so, if one has to boil it to death in terms? of calories in calories out it is not worth it. And, it can make you throw up.
Not a protected ...
Not a protected species. No weapon involved. You might want to take them? home and feed them a grain diet for a while... Actually, I grew up with ducks and chickens and like ducks as pets around the house.
Good plant close ...
Good plant close ups!
Be careful eating urban muscovy, many city people consider anyone harming a Muscovy to be criminals and? will call the cops claiming you to be guilty of animal cruelty.
Muscovy are not considered domestic legally and are allegedly the finest eating ducks but have become pets to some city dwellers that forget where their food comes from.
cast netting ducks. ...
cast netting ducks... legal? i've seen a ton of em around me and i've never had duck before.?
I have read the ...
I have read the roots of the yellow lilies are ediable, so I tried them. Most bitter, horrible tasting thing I ever ate. I spit it out, and tried boiling it. It was still to bitter to eat, so I boiled it in about 5 changes of water. That made it edible, but? it was a lot of effort, and still tasted bitter, and not enjoyable at all. I guess if it is the only thing to eat, you can boil it to death, but it is is not easy to get (go swimming) and flavor wise, not worth it.
A FLIP? I ...
A FLIP? I mentioned the good camera in the second part with out seeing this post. I have a HD FLIP as well, and I also got it as a Christmas present. ? How interesting. Well, I need to start making some videos to post on here with it. Anyway, thanks for the great information.
I like them both ...
I like them both actually, but? the foray's allow you to show case your skills.. I keep thinking Mr. Deen could walk into a park half starved and come out the other end stuffed like a thanksgiving turckey.. that's survival skills right there, which is my interest.
Thanks again!!
They may be, but ...
They may be, but not in a bad way. There are several rushes in Florida and I don't know of any toxic ones though some of them may not have much to offer for food. The lillies could be the same or water shields, or? if in way south Florida some escaped exotic.
Thanks. The camera ...
Thanks. The camera is still a FLIP but a two-gig version, and was? a Christmas present. A lot of folks don't care for the forays because there is less about particular plants.
Thanks, I really ...
Thanks, I really like this foray format and the high quality cam? that you've obviously upgraded to. Very good stuff
Thanks again!!
